Sphagnum rubellum has short fibers and is completely red in winter, turning dark green in summer when there are no sudden temperature changes. Its capitulum is small, star-shaped, and flatter compared to capillifolium. Unlike capillifolium, it usually lives in much more flooded areas, which is why its cushions are short and less dense.
