Sfagno vivo : Sphagnum quinquefarium

Sphagnum quinquefarium is a small-headed sphagnum moss, at least for male specimens, recognizable by their small red-tipped branches. The female specimens have slightly larger, green or red heads. It is not a sphagnum moss typical of peat bogs or mires, but lives in wood undergrowth and hygrophilous woodlands, often on mineral-rich substrates so it has wide variety of head colors. This specimen is typical of the Cadore area in the eastern Alps. It is often found together with Capillifolium and Squarrosum
