Live sphagnum: Sphagnum divinum Northern European form

Sphagnum divinum, along with Sphagnum medium, were recently classified as separate species. A 2018 study in the Journal of Bryology demonstrated their relationship with Sphagnum magellanicum, but also highlighted their differences. While the latter is widely distributed in South America, Sphagnum divinum and Sphagnum medium populate European peat bogs. The color of Sphagnum divinum ranges from pale green to deep garnet red and it often grows on the edges of peat bogs and in less flooded areas. The adult flower head has distinctive leaflets that form small braids.
