All the species belonging to this genus are characterized by the total absence of a root system (a character shared with the genus utricularia and heterophyllia , consisting in the presence of two types of leaves: green leaves with photosynthetic function and modified hypogeal leaves, called rhizophylls, which they perform both some of the typical functions of roots, such as anchoring the plant to the ground, but also the capture of small soil organisms.
